This morning, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced the launch of the FINABIEN Paisan@ Card, a new tool designed to make sending money from the U.S. to Mexico cheaper, faster, and safer. Managed by Financiera para el Bienestar (FINABIEN), this card helps Mexican migrants avoid the upcoming 1% tax on cash remittances, which will take effect in 2026.
Key benefits
- Tax-free transfers: When using the FINABIEN Paisan@ Card for electronic transfers, senders avoid the 1% remittance tax, which only applies to cash transactions.
- Low fees: Each transaction costs just 2.99 USD, reduced from the original 3.99 USD.
- Attractive limits: Send up to 2,500 USD per day and 10,000 USD per month.
- Instant transfers: Funds arrive in seconds to the recipient’s card in Mexico via the app.
How to get it
- In the U.S., the card is available at 53 Mexican consulates, or online at finabien.gob.mx or tarjetafinabien.com/us. Users receive two physical cards: one for use in the U.S. and one for their recipient in Mexico.
- In Mexico, it’s available at over 1,700 FINABIEN branches or online.
How it works
Funds can be added via paycheck deposits or cash at over 100,000 U.S. locations. Using the mobile app, senders simply select “Send Money,” choose the recipient’s card, and confirm the transfer. Funds can be withdrawn or used for purchases in Mexico immediately.
Additional benefits
- Accepted anywhere Visa is accepted.
- Allows payments and withdrawals at 30,000 merchants in Mexico.
- Includes a virtual vault offering a 10% annual yield, compounded monthly.
Program status
Currently, over 30,000 active cards are in circulation, with more than 20 million USD already transferred using this system.
Through this new solution, the Mexican government aims to protect migrants from the upcoming cash remittance tax while providing a reliable, affordable way to support families back home.
